Furniture design | 4th semester | WiSe23-24

In the winter semester 23-24, the students of the 4th semester designed new teaching and learning rooms at the HFT according to their wishes. The atmosphere and character of the rooms should be less of a university and learning institution and more of a feel-good oasis, club or café where people like to go and socialize.

Alternatively, as individual work, new types of furniture, products or room installations were to be designed that enable learning and teaching in a positive atmosphere and different settings.

New work or old school? Furniture design by Michelle Müller-Trudrung, Kathleen Ratz and Rosalie Riegler

This was the motto for the furniture design in semester 4. Together with SkiLL, the Service Center for Competence-Oriented & Innovative Learning & Teaching, the focus was on creating new work opportunities for us students. In addition to the newly designed room in Building 5, we created our StudioPod, an individual work booth that can be located anywhere at the HfT and be accessible to everyone.

In some of our workspaces there is a very high noise level and working is only possible at large group tables. Our aim was therefore to design an individual work booth that gives you the opportunity to work in a more secluded and focused way. The doors of the StudioPod can be opened and closed in different ways to signal to others whether you want to communicate or not. The fold-out table also offers the option of a second workstation where you can work standing up. This offers a welcome change from sitting for hours on end.

The exterior of the StudioPod blends into any environment thanks to the three-layer spruce top and the polycarbonate top. In contrast, the interior stands out with its bright colors and invites you to sit down in the pod. The aluminum profiles, the visible screws and the metal handles give the StudioPod a visibly technical touch. As already mentioned, the individual work booth is ready for use anywhere, which is why it is mounted on castors and can be moved easily.

The furniture was designed by students for students. The angle is designed to adapt to the desired learning or teaching situation and can be rearranged as required. Whether as a room divider, presentation surface or as a privacy screen and partition for the table, the angle retains its ease of use. Three angles, each with a height of 35 cm, 60 cm and 110 cm, can be stacked on top of each other and arranged as required thanks to an individually developed wooden profile. The "L" shape of the bracket makes it inherently stable, but a 3D printed joint and a rubber ring allow the brackets to be connected in one easy step. Ease of use was an important aspect of the design. It should be possible to carry out all the steps involved in assembly and disassembly alone or in pairs. The substructure is simple and saves on weight and material; it consists of a wooden frame with squared timbers made of solid beech wood. The PET felt board is used to reinforce the construction. The PET felt board is 12 mm thick and can be used in various colors. The properties meet the requirements of a semi-public space, as it is robust, regulating, flame-retardant, mold-free, emission-free, color-resistant and sound-absorbing.
