An energy-neutral museum is to be built at the new Cottbus Baltic Sea. It will focus on the history of the energy region of Lusatia and its transformation, as well as the culture of the Sorbs. The basic idea behind the design was to create a walk-in shelf that brings the exhibition to life, an interactive play structure for young and old. The design is characterised by its layering. Both the layering of the exhibitions in height and the thermal layering of the areas in depth, following the onion principle, characterise the appearance and offer a high level of energy efficiency. The large exhibits are displayed on the shelving outside. The interactive part is located inside and runs like a spiral through the shelf. The entire building is based on a consistent load-bearing grid in order to conserve resources and maximise the reusability of materials.
The project was supervised by Professors Dr. Uli Jakob, Ralf Petersen, Martin Stumpf and Peter Schlaier.
