"designed from shells" - Exhibition at the HFT Stuttgart in Building 1

Results of the research project “Stuttgart 210 - thinking ahead, building ahead!” on display at the university in the atrium in Building 1 from 29 January 2025 to March 2025
A crooked log also makes a straight fire. Despite this saying and plans for thermal utilisation, an interdisciplinary team from the universities of Constance (Prof. Stefan Krötsch), Stuttgart (Prof. Andreas Kretzer) and Karlsruhe (Prof. Robert Pawlowski) spent two years investigating forward-looking concepts on how the innovative reuse of formwork elements from the construction of Stuttgart's new main railway station can make an ecological contribution to the construction sector.
In addition to aesthetic and functional aspects, the exhibition sheds light on the practicality of re-use and the specific challenges of upcycling on a large scale with structural engineering, legal and life cycle assessment issues. Plans, photographs and models show the possible use of formwork elements in various real-world laboratories in Baden-Württemberg in order to conserve raw materials and reduce CO2 emissions. At an interactive exhibition station, visitors can experience the real-world laboratories and dimensions of the reused components on a 1:1 scale and try their hand at their own virtual buildings.
In July 2024, the first real-world laboratory, the Ingersheim youth centre, was built under the direction of Prof. Andreas Kretzer as part of the international workshop in the Master's degree course in Interior Architecture (imiad) with the support of 43 German, Indian and Turkish students. The construction process is shown in an almost 30-minute video.
