Bachelor thesis | Luca Schulze | 7th semester | Summer semester 2024
Vast fields that rest on the Lias ridge. Views that long for the distance. The idyll must give way.
"Das Neu"...once sweet orchards now flaunt the par excellence of the detached house... "Das neue Neu" questions conventional living, private transport, land scarcity and aesthetic sustainability.
The ensemble consists of a semi-public residential block, a public tower and the square at its foot. The clarity of the design comes from the repetition of the same elements, which determine the rhythm of the buildings. Anomalies, such as a "vers libre", emphasise special situations and moments, inspired by Manolzweiler's narratives.
The 22-metre-high, elevated tower offers space for music, dance and exchange. From here you can look out over the village and the Schurwald forest. As a communicating element, the ground floor area creates a dialogue between living, working and the public.
Seven two-storey maisonette flats in studio form are lined up along the 66-metre-long residential block. Freely positionable sanitary blocks enable individual use, whether for artists, workshops or communal facilities.
A café welcomes visitors and residents in the north, while washing and drying is done together in the south. Four storeys of timber frame construction rest on solid sand-lime brick walls. Arcades provide access to the innovative residential units, which can be flexibly extended using switch rooms.
The design creates adaptable spaces, promotes mixed use and questions social and architectural dogmas.
The Bachelor's thesis was supervised by Prof. Jonathan Scheder and professorship representation Fabian Hörmann.
